Firstly, an apology - I am aware that there has been radio silence over the past 6+ weeks. Without going into depth, I've marked over 12000 examination items, continued to teach full time, been made redundant as part of a school closure, found a new job from September, and have transported 500+ books out of my classroom and accommodated them in my office bookcases. So, I've been busy!
This blog post is a departure from the usual pedagogy-related content aimed at fellow educators, and is a direct message to those students of mine affected by the closure, and those parents and colleagues who I have worked with over the past decade.
The job that I get to do is a privilege. Every day, good or bad, is an opportunity to influence, mould and support a young person's life experiences - this is not a responsibility I ever take lightly, regardless of the terrible/amazing jokes I choose to crack in my classroom.
To every student who is having to find a new school in September - it has been a joy to work with every one of you. Your new schools are lucky to have you, you will make amazing new friends and connections, and have some of the most fortunate teachers imaginable to get to carry on the journey you have been on with us. I wish you every success in the future.
To every parent who has supported me, challenged me, and worked with me to shape your child's education - from the bottom of my heart, thank you. It is impossible to put into words, especially with my poor grasp of them, how much I value every interaction (positive or negative) - your involvement in your child's education and your insistence that I/we always gave our best is the paramount reason I know their future is in safe hands.
Finally, to every colleague I have been fortunate enough to work with over the past decade at St Clare's - thank you for your camaraderie, your support, your tolerance of my mood swings (and hilarious puns). None of us deserve the future that has been imposed upon us, but I am certain you will all find your way on the journey. I sincerely hope that it is not the last time I am fortunate enough to cross paths with you all.
Tomorrow really is the end of an era.
When one door closes, another one opens. Sadly, not all of us will walk through that same door together. I hope you all find the right door for you.
